How do you shape a shoulder, standing from the side? I'm horrible at sketching, and I'd really love to be able to draw without a reference

I basically just memorized a horse's bone structure. After I understood the way the skeleton looked it helped me a lot. Then I studied the horse's musculature to help me with shading and adding depth in a painting.
I suggest looking at horse skeletons and sketching out the basic linking lines, taking note of the proportions to eachother

i tried making a clipping mask but i ended up coloring the lines and not the horse.
also, after you colorblock do you merge the layers?
